Oh you ol’ romantic – I love that you love candles. Hurricanes are a Dan Mazz staple: I use them in practically every kind of style project, especially in beach houses where they are an emphatic “must have.” What started as a utility piece (glass shades were used to protect flames in inclement weather and wind…) now casts their light in a decorative way.
Hurricanes come in all manners of glass, and all sorts of additional bells and whistles. You can find them with metal bases and caps (like Ralph Lauren’s…) or etched with traditional detail. Our roundup focuses on simple forms, ones that look as great on a cocktail table as they do setting the mood for outdoor dining. While all are pre-approved, here’s my cheat sheet when shopping for hurricanes:
1 – Go as big as possible. Scale is a great architectural addition to any tablescape, and the glass material keeps them transparent for vision and conversations.
2 – Consider texture – I love a seed glass, a wavy hand-blown glass, and anything that casts a rippled texture through the candlelight.
3 – Candles – use real candles in a wider diameter – like 3”-4” wide. I like the height of a candle to be about 1/2 and no more than ¾ of the height of the hurricane itself.
4 – Buy and display in pairs. I don’t know why, but two seems to look better than one to me.
And remember: every season is hurricane season, when it comes to candlelight.
