I’ve started to collect etchings for our New York apartment. From landscapes to abstract images, I like their black and white, handmade quality. Etchings are actually made by scratching a pattern onto a metal plate, rolling ink onto that plate, and then pressing the plate to paper through a compression machine. It’s similar to how newspapers were once made.
Etchings are painstaking to create and tend to be smaller in scale as a result. To compensate, I like to add a 4”, 8-ply matte, and big chunky frame to give them an unexpected presence. To help you build your collection, we’ve found some images that I’m really fond of, from landscapes, to objects, and abstract forms. Consider adding a few sketches to your existing collection of black and white photos – they blend right in, and add an organic artistic hand to the mix.
