A salty seaside getaway for hot summer days and cool breezy nights.

There’s just something about a beach house — Movies like “Beaches”and all things Nancy Meyers have shaped a generations’ worth of shore-loving designers. For me, black and white beach houses specifically are both chic and effortless. It’s a palette that is timeless, but still modern, and allows for people, plants, art and the outdoors to take center stage. From white glossy floors, to cabana stripes, splatterware to art and objets, #blackandwhite is always right when it comes to a beach house. Here is some of my favorite inspo to inspire your “it’s still summer” vibes this September - enjoy!

Dan Mazzarini of Manhattan-based design studio BHDM Design transformed this four-bedroom house on Long Island’s North Fork into a crisp and contemporary beach retreat for a couple and their three young children.
After coming across the home by chance when walking along the beach, the couple approached the owner, a local architect, and eventually purchased the property this past January.
The double-height living room, which is open to the kitchen and dining room, is 33-feet at its apex. A graphic, black-and-white theme runs throughout the house and plays out here thanks to ivory sofas from Restoration Hardware, a coffee table from Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co., and teak root tables from Teak Warehouse. A canoe’s bare wooden frame adorns one wall, while an artwork by Caitlin McGauley hangs above the fireplace.
Mazzarini often turns bookcases into artful displays. “I think it’s important that books can take on a decorative life after they’ve been read, and today, with iPads and Kindles, we don’t necessarily just read [physical] books, so it feels even more relevant to create multipurpose shelving,” he says. Paper-wrapped volumes became the backdrop to a symmetric display of photographs, topped off by lamps from Bobo Intriguing Objects.

The kitchen doubles as an informal breakfast spot and a formal dining area. A Roost bamboo chandelier illuminates the sculptural round wood table from Taramundi Furniture and chairs by Bobo Intriguing Objects. The glossy black lights above the kitchen island are by Schoolhouse Electric, an industrial touch to the otherwise polished space.

A sunny corner of the master bedroom features a dramatic black spiral staircase that reiterates the house’s crisp, high-contrast palette (and leads to a lofted office space). Mazzarini reupholstered the vintage Beall and Bell chairs in a Holly Hunt fabric and discovered the metal-and-birch bench at Amsterdam Modern.

The family needed room for guests, so several sets of bunk beds can be found throughout the house, which sleeps a total of 16. For a playful punch, Mazzarini mixed and matched several patterns in the kids’ bedroom, including spotted Kate Spade Saturday bedding, graphic pillows from Etsy, and custom-made roman blinds in a zigzag Brunschwig & Fils fabric. The round table is from Amsterdam Modern.
